Clik here to view. The story of blogs, though short, is quite interesting in its own right. The word blog itself is short for “web log”, and there is general debate on when the first blogs truly began to appear. The word itself, however, was coined in 1999; the word “weblog” appeared in 1997, and a shortening of the term to the word “blog” appeared on message boards around 1999.
Roots
The actual phenomenon that we would called “blogging”, however, was already in vogue by that point in time: early bloggers of the period used different names for their blogs, calling them “diaries”, “journals”, or “zines”. Blogging itself, though the term had not been invented yet, seems to have existed since at least 1994, when bloggers like Justin Hall were keeping day-to-day, updated short articles, a form that we would now popularly term a blog.
Popularity
Blogs exploded in 1999, with the popularity of sites like LiveJournal and and blogger.com, and the rest, as they say, is history: throughout the first decade of the 20th century, blogs became one of the most common types of websites on the Internet, used for everything from personal diaries and observations to the proliferation of important consumer awareness issues and business reviews and critiques. One thing’s for certain, however: Blogs are here to stay, and they’ll be a force to reckon with for years to come!
